Bluware Releases OpenVDS Version 1.0 to The Open Group Open Subsurface Data Universe™ (OSDU) Data Platform

HOUSTON, TX – June 29, 2020 – Bluware Corp., the digital platform that enables the oil and gas industry to accelerate digital transformation initiatives and adopt cloud computing for subsurface data, is pleased to contribute OpenVDS Version 1.0 to The Open Group Open Subsurface Data Universe™ (OSDU) Data Platform, an open source storage format for fast random access to multi-dimensional volumetric data.

For major E&P companies, the question is no longer whether to use cloud technology; it’s how to overcome inherent limitations in existing seismic data formats and streamline cloud implementation.

The OpenVDS format is highly flexible and can store any kind of data representable as arrays with key/value-pair metadata. It is designed to handle extremely large volumes, up to petabytes in size, and can be stored in an object storage cloud service such as Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure Blob storage.

“OpenVDS will be integral in reducing data silos and will enable efficient I/O for high-performance computing and machine learning workloads,” says Johan Krebbers, General Manager of Digital Emerging Technologies and Vice President of IT Innovation at Shell.

OpenVDS may be used to store E&P data types such as regularized single-z horizons/height-maps, seismic lines, pre-stack volumes, post-stack volumes, geobody volumes, and attribute volumes of any dimensionality up to 6D. Data commonly used in seismic processing can be stored along with all necessary metadata. This makes it possible to move from existing seismic data formats to OpenVDS and back, while retaining all metadata.

OpenVDS is a subset of Bluware’s existing Volume Data Store (VDS™) proprietary format, which has seen extensive industrial deployments over the last two decades.

“Offering OpenVDS to the oil and gas industry is setting the stage for an industry-wide digital transformation movement that will change how E&P operators evaluate and leverage seismic data,” commented Dan Piette, CEO of Bluware.
